      <image:title>About - Our approach: Learn by doing.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The best way to learn how to “go pro”, is to do as the pros do. That’s where we come in… At The U.P. Summer Theater Institute, young Performers and Tech/Design students (current 6th-11th graders) are immersed in the three week process of putting up a full-scale, full-length musical. They are led through this process by a diverse team of artists, designers, and technicians from the stages of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and nationally renowned regional theaters. Rather than a theoretical or recreational approach, we help young theatermakers learn how to prepare for a role in a professional show through applied learning (i.e. “learn by doing”). We believe this best prepares and trains them to be able to integrate all of their skills, technique, and talent into performance and collaboration…and more importantly-it is FUN!</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e1208e44eae7b30460df4b8/e7458a33-4369-48a0-91a4-132509b33746/IMG_2418.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>About - Our Process</image:title>
      <image:caption>In Broadway Bound, theatermakers follow the rigorous, 3 week regional theater rehearsal model to mount a full-length musical production. During the first two weeks, our Performers are immersed in full-time rehearsal 6 days a week with the Artistic Team (Director/Choreographer/Music Director). Our Tech/Design students actively work under the mentorship of our Production Team (professional designers and technicians) to build the show that a paying, public audience will see at the end of the program. In the third week, theatermakers come together for the “Tech” process. This means we move from the rehearsal room to the stage, where we integrate all of the technical and design elements such as the set, lights, sound, costumes, orchestra, etc. into the show. The third weekend culminates in multiple public performances for a paying public audience on the state-of-the-art stage at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts! Your journey can end there, or… Theatermakers have the option to extend their time with us by staying on for a 4th week together in Theater Workshop @ UPSTI. We shift gears from full musical production to educational focused, technique based learning as we take a deep dive into masterclasses and specialty education (hello Shakespeare!) taught by industry experts. Theater Workshop concludes in yet another performance opportunity, this time in the style of a college showcase for family and friends.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Performing Vs Tech/Design - The Onstage Track: Performing Emphasis</image:title>
      <image:caption>If you thrive under the spotlight, or simply cannot refrain from singing and dancing every chance you get, this program is for you! Performers will rehearse full-time(six days a week) for two weeks, learning the music, staging, and the choreography of a full-length commercial Broadway musical. In the third week, they move from the rehearsal room to the stage, where they will collaborate with the Design/Tech students and the Production Team to integrate the technical elements into the show: lights, sound, set, props, costumes, hair/make-up, music, etc. The final weekend culminates in multiple public performances for a paying audience on the state-of-the-art stage at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. While this is a competitive, pre-professional program geared towards young people with a keen interest in performing, we understand that not everyone has the privilege and/or access to theater training before working with us. We encourage anyone auditioning to trust that we don’t need to see a polished product. Talent will get you in the door, but we are also interested in your potential to grow and thrive.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Performing Vs Tech/Design - The Offstage Track: Tech/Design Emphasis</image:title>
      <image:caption>We get it, not everyone who loves theater wants to perform. If you’d rather build the costume than wear it, or if you can’t WAIT to nerd out on mixing the soundboard or running the light cues…WELCOME friends. If your happy place is organizing chaos and calling cues (hello future stage managers), we have a program for you. Technical/Design students will work directly on mounting a full-scale musical under the mentorship of top industry professionals to hone their skills in lighting, audio/sound design, set design/construction, costume design/construction, stage management, and more! Our tech/design students will spend three weeks fully immersed in the hands-on experience of working with state-of-the-art equipment at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts (seen in photo). In the first week, they will get a broad overview of all the elements available to them when pursuing a life in theater tech or design. In other words, they will spend a lot of time bouncing between the theater, costume shop, scene shop, and even the rehearsal room. They’ll build props and costumes, assemble set pieces, hang lights, shadow stage management, and develop the skills necessary to build a show in a group format. The second week, they have the option to choose a specific specialty, and they will focus their efforts on whatever element they feel most drawn to, under an assigned mentorship team. If they wish to remain broad in their focus, we will also support their right to not choose a specialty, and instead remain collaborative with multiple teams. The third week is “all hands on deck”. A collaborative spirit is a must, as Tech/Design students will be working directly with our brilliant Design team, Creative team, and Production Team to build the show that our public audiences will see. The show you see in the final weekend will be run in part by our tech/design students, teaming up with their professional faculty mentors and the cast of performers, to experience what it feels like to tech and run a full-scale show with a live audience.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Meet the Team - Our Creative and Production Teams come to you from the commercial stages of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and nationally renowned regional theaters to work with the young theatermakers in our summer program.</image:title>
      <image:caption>We are professional actors, directors, choreographers, musicians, stage managers, technicians, and designers. We know what it takes to put up a professional show, and we have the years of blood, sweat, and sequins to prove it. During the year, we are still working professionals in the field. Our continued experience onstage and behind the table allows us to lead young theatermakers from a place of empathy, as we have a deep understanding and respect for what they experience in the process of making theater. We understand that no matter what we strive to teach this next generation, they’re also watching how we work, so we practice what we teach (pun intended) by modeling inclusivity, empathetic leadership, and enthusiastic collaboration. <image:title>About (Copy) - Our approach: Learn by doing.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The best way to learn how to “go pro”, is to do as the pros do. That’s where we come in… At The U.P. Summer Theater Institute, young Performers and Tech/Design students (current 6th-11th graders) are immersed in the four week process of putting up a full-scale, full-length musical. They are led through this process by a diverse team of professional artists, designers, and technicians from the stages of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and nationally renowned regional theaters.

      <image:title>About (Copy) - Our Process</image:title>
      <image:caption>The theatermakers follow the rigorous, 3 week regional theater rehearsal model to mount a full-length musical production. Our Performers are immersed in full-time rehearsal 6 days a week with the Artistic Team (Director/Choreographer/Music Director). We celebrate Opening Night as the weekend culminates in multiple public performances for a paying audience full of family, friends, and the surrounding community on the state-of-the-art stage at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts! During the fourth week, theatermakers dive into masterclasses and specialty education (hello Shakespeare!) with industry experts, and round up their final UPSTI weekend with another exciting weekend of performances.</image:caption>
